In August of 1979, a royal order was issued to build King Khalid Eye Specialist Hospital, which rose to rank among the best hospitals in the world. The government has donated a 2.5 km2 land on the northwestern border of the city of Riyadh for the implementation of the project.

King Khalid, may God have mercy on him, closely followed the construction process of the hospital, the first phase of which was completed by June 1981, during which most of the hospital departments, the mosque, the 22 residential villas, the six residential buildings, each consisting of five floors, and a service center were completed. The hospital began operating in December 1982.
